Garces, Esq. of Garces & Grabler, P.C. will be a Guest Speaker at Restoring Freedoms, a conference in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “vision of a free and prosperous America for all.” Mr. Garces will be speaking on Immigration Reform.

The Restoring Freedoms conference is slated for August 28, 2011, on the anniversary of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The goals of the conference are to bring that message of freedom and liberty into the inner city and urban areas.

The event will be held at the State House, 125 W. State Street, Trenton, New Jersey, 10am-5pm. The event is free, and is open to the public.

Other Guest Speakers include Mayor of Trenton Tony Mack, union leader and civil rights activist Jesse Epps, and Mayor of Borough of Highlands, New Jersey, Anna Little, among other inspirational speakers who will address what freedom means to them and how we, as a society, can move forward to ensure that America will always be a beacon of light for justice and equality to those oppressed.

Invited Guests include Congressman Ron Paul of Texas, U.S. Senator Rand Paul, as well as activist and civil rights minister Rev. Al Sampson.

“Preserving freedom is something we have to be vigilant about in this society and make sure our freedoms are extended to everyone,” Mr. Garces said.

The Restoring Freedoms event is raising money for three deserving Trenton organizations. A portion of the funds raised will be donated to UIH Family Partners, Education Works, and the Trenton Veterans Service.

There will also be a collection bin set up for those who wish to donate education supplies.

Other participating groups include the National Union of American Families, The Political Emporium, Campaign for Liberty, as well as Young Americans for Liberty.

Restoring Freedoms had originally been scheduled for January 17, in remembrance of Martin Luther King.

Kessous, Esq. and Michelle Labrada, Esq., of the Criminal/Municipal Court Defense Unit of Garces & Grabler, P.C., participated as voluntary defense attorneys in the Central New Jersey U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Safe Surrender Program. Held at a local New Brunswick school during the dates of November 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th, 2010, almost 2,000 individuals designated on active bench warrant status from local and state of New Jersey Courts received an opportunity to vacate their respective bench warrants.  Armed with the benefit of free legal advice, participants’ addressed their respective cases involving traffic, municipal, child support issues and/or criminal offenses.

On site, while participants waited in the auditorium for an assigned defense counsel or conferenced their case with counsel, volunteer attorneys including Mr. Kessous and Ms. Labrada were present on stage awaiting assignments. Six virtual courts amassed an adjacent room where a judge, court staff, prosecutor, defense counsel and each participant resolved cases. Other classrooms were filled with court computers, law enforcement personnel, state and county prosecutors, court staff members, volunteers, faith based leaders, and members of the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, Somerset, N.J. who provided the work force for this initiative.

Bush-Baskette, JD, PhD.  This round table discussion highlighted key points detailed in her recently published work Misguided Justice: The War on Drugs and Incarceration of Black Women.

The product of years of statistical research, Dr. Bush-Baskette discussed compelling data suggesting the vast divide in sentencing and parole allocations that exist between suburban and primarily minority communities in our urban environments.   This divide is a direct product of Federal and State of New Jersey statutes passed with the intention of appeasing political fervor, as opposed to being developed as a result of a practical, clinical view of incarceration and addiction.

Contributions towards this fascinating discussion were offered from attending academics, active political participants, parolees who have been through the system, and criminal defense attorney Jonathan Kessous of the Law Offices of Garces & Grabler.

Mr. Reverón was twenty years old when he transferred from the University of Puerto Rico to the Berklee College of Music, located in Boston, MA, in 1974. He left college to pursue a career as a musician. Mr. Reverón returned to college in 1982 and obtained a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in Film Scoring, from Berklee College of Music in 1984. He continued relocating between Boston, Puerto Rico and New York City, finally settling in New York in 1992.

Only this time, the dog’s unprovoked attack was on a family member.  Apparently, the dog owner made the wise decision to euthanize Congo and three other dogs.

The dog owner still insists that the dogs did not bite his family member. But the police officer on the scene and the doctor attending the attack victim have a different report of the unprovoked attack. Detective Sgt. Ernie Silagyi said the police officers responding to the scene indicated there “were obvious dog bites.” The attending emergency room doctor said, “this was definitely dog bites, not scratches.”

Giovanni Rivera, a Honduran immigrant, was brutally attacked by a German shepherd named Congo and four of his pups while working at the dog owner’s home. Mr. Rivera received a $250,000 settlement for injuries caused by the attack through the representation of Kevin Riechelson. This case received national and international attention because it raised issues related to immigration. Read more about the Congo case

The defendant, who faced charges of 2nd degree offenses of Possession of Loaded Firearms/Certain Persons Prohibited from Carrying Firearms, would have faced a 10-year prison term, and would not have been eligible for parole for five years.

Under New Jersey Criminal Statutes, there are two distinct types of weapons charges: Possession of Weapons for Unlawful Purposes, and Unlawful Possession of Weapons.

Possession of Weapons for Unlawful Purposes is having a gun, firearm or weapon for the purpose of using it unlawfully against a person or property, such as in committing a crime.

Unlawful Possession of Weapons is having a gun without the legal right to do so, such as a firearm that is illegal to own, or a gun for which you do not have the necessary permit or Firearms ID card.
